Why “Just Get Your Foot in the Door” Is Terrible Advice for New Teachers
Apr 18, 2026Every year, I hear the same advice being passed down to new teachers:
“Just get your foot in the door.”
It sounds practical. Logical, even.
But I’m going to say something no one else is saying:
It’s some of the worst advice you can follow.
And I know that because I didn’t follow it—and I got hired faster than many of my peers who did.
So let’s talk about why this advice is so common…
and why it’s quietly setting new teachers up for burnout before they even begin.
Why This Advice Is So Common
This advice isn’t rooted in strategy.
It’s rooted in fear.
There’s this underlying belief that:
- New teachers won’t get hired
- Experience matters more than anything
- You should take whatever you can get
So the solution becomes: apply everywhere, accept anything, and be grateful.
But here’s the problem…
When you make decisions from fear, you end up in situations that don’t actually support you.
The Hidden Cost of “Getting Your Foot in the Door”
On the surface, this advice seems harmless.
But behind the scenes, it creates a ripple effect that many teachers don’t see coming.
1. You Burn Out Before You Even Begin
Applying to 30+ districts, constantly checking emails, hearing nothing back—it’s exhausting.
2. You End Up in a Misaligned District
When you apply everywhere, you’re not choosing—you’re hoping.
And hope is not a hiring strategy.
3. You Leave the Profession Too Soon
So many teachers quit within the first few years…
Not because they aren’t good teachers.
But because they ended up in environments that didn’t support them.
This isn’t a skill issue.
It’s an alignment issue.
Here’s the Truth No One Is Saying
Your dream district is looking for you just as much as you are looking for it.
There is a version of you who already works in a school that:
- supports you
- values you
- aligns with how you want to teach
And instead of asking,
“How do I get hired anywhere?”
Start asking:
What would she be doing right now?
What would she be looking for?
Because this was the shift that changed everything for me.
It stopped being about getting hired.
And started being about being supported.
The Identity Shift That Changes Everything
This is where everything clicks.
You’re not desperate.
You know your worth.
You play the long game.
You are discerning.
And when you step into that version of yourself…
You show up differently.
Let me show you the difference:
Scenario 1:
You send mass emails to anyone who will listen.
Generic. Broad. Forgettable.
Scenario 2:
You send a thoughtful, specific email to one district—
clearly communicating why you are the right fit for them.
Confident. Intentional. Memorable.
Same teacher.
Completely different energy.
The Reframe You Need to Hear
Your first teaching job shapes your entire career.
Read that again.
This isn’t about “just getting in.”
This is about choosing wisely.
Because the environment you step into will either:
- support your growth
or - drain you before you’ve even had a chance to thrive
Take Action: Do This Instead
If you’ve been applying everywhere, here’s your next step:
- Take your list of 30+ districts
- Identify your dream district
- Narrow it down to 3–5 aligned districts
- Go all in on those
Research them.
Understand their values.
Speak directly to why you align.
This is how you stand out.
This is how you get hired.
Recap
Let’s bring it all together:

- The hidden cost is burnout, misalignment, and leaving the profession early
- Your dream district is looking for you too
- The shift is from desperation → discernment
- Your first job isn’t random—it’s foundational
